3 Golden Nuggets to Achieving Any Goal

Personal Development . 4 Min. Read . By: Devon Brown

No, I'm not talking about McDonald's golden chicken nuggets. Although those are pretty tasty in my opinion, I have 3 golden nuggets of wisdom that'll help you taste something much better... sweet success!

The first nugget is about expectations, the second is about the process, and the third is about your mindset. All three together will help pave the way for you to achieve any goal. And yes, I do mean any goal, from fitness to business to your love life.

So, stop thinking about McDonald’s chicken nuggets, and dig into these 3 golden nuggets!

The 3 Golden Nuggets

In the video, I went over the 3 goal achievement tips in less than 2 minutes. But I think it’d be helpful to take a closer look at each. I want to make sure you really understand how these 3 nuggets can greatly impact your ability to achieve your goals.

The 3 Golden Nuggets to achieve your goals are:

Nugget #1: Expect success to take longer than you'd like

Nugget #2: FOCUS on one course until successful

Nugget #3: Fall in love with the process

Now, let’s take each nugget and dip it into some tangy BBQ sauce to really get the most flavor.  Translation: let’s take a closer look to get the most out of each nugget of wisdom.

#1 Expect Success to Take Longer Than You'd Like

As much as we wish the road to success was like a fast-food drive-thru, it’s more like a BBQ smokehouse.

If you’ve ever been to the South, you know what I’m talking about. You know that the best BBQ house is not the flashy restaurant with a drive-thru lane; it’s the shack on the side of the road with a line that rivals Disneyland’s Space Mountain.

As goal-setters, we’re optimists. We’re dreamers. We like to think we can drive up, put in our order, and pull straight up to the window of success. But that’s just not the case.

Start towards your goal with the expectation that probably it will take a bit longer to reach than you'd like

But, as goal-setters, we also need to be realists. And the reality is great BBQ takes time. Success takes time.

So, if you’re just starting out or you’re trying something new, do yourself a favor. Take whatever timeline you think you can do it in, and add at least 50-100%. That’ll help you stay motivated but give you the wiggle room you need to buffer your optimism.

Do yourself a favor... add 50-100% to whatever timeline you think you can do it in.

There's an old saying that goes: "We overestimate what can accomplish in 2 months, but we underestimate what we can accomplish in 2 years". I've found this saying to be true more often than not.

Just because what you're looking for doesn't come "drive-thru fast", doesn't mean it's not coming.

#2 FOCUS on One Course Until Successful

You may have noticed that I have a LOT of energy. I can hardly sit still and practically bounce through my day. So, this golden nugget is one I’ve really had to take to heart.

F.O.C.U.S. stands for Follow One Course Until Successful.

You know that totally freakish and macabre saying, “there’s more than one way to skin a cat”? Well, that concept gets us in trouble a lot more than it does cats (or at least I hope so!).

You Have to Follow One Course of Action Until You Get What You Want

Too often, we have so many ideas, so much input, that we are pulled in too many directions. Our path to success ends up looking like a series of construction zones and detours.

Stop looking for ways to skin a cat! Dig deep into some initial research, then commit to the best course of action. Stick with that one training course. Follow that one expert’s program. Use that one system to organize everything.

Follow one course until successful. FOCUS!

#3 Fall in Love with the Process

If you’ve followed me for any amount of time, you’ve probably heard me say, “The goal is NEVER the goal!”

I’ve shot a video and written a blog on the topic, but here is the gist of the lesson…

Too many people think the goal is the desired outcome. It’s not! The goal is to form habits that will lead us to the desired outcome.

Why is that an important distinction? Because we don’t determine outcomes, we determine our habits. And habits determine outcomes.

Our habits determine our outcomes

Don’t fall in love with the idea of success! Instead, you need to fall in love with the process. Otherwise, your love of success is going to turn into a long-distance relationship that will fizzle and die.

If you fall in love with the process, you can enjoy every step on your road to success. You can laugh at the potholes and cheer for the green lights. You can dismiss the setbacks and appreciate the small wins.

Don’t obsess over the outcome; fall in love with the process!

I’m going to leave you with an extra side of wisdom: Just Throw Some Sexy On It

With regard to achieving goals, I've typically found there are core ideas and principles that help accelerate your success even faster. Whenever I discover an idea or valuable insight that accelerates success, I call it a “Sexy.”

So, whenever I set a goal, I tell myself to “Just throw some sexy on it.” That is my cue to find and apply the right insight to my situation.

Whenever you set a goal, search for core ideas and insights (i.e. "Sexies") that can help along the way. Search for mentors, guides, classes, encouragement, and more. This is a big part of the "dig deep into initial research" I mentioned earlier.

Then, take those "Sexy" ideas and insights and throw them all over your goals and strategies!
